The Martin Luther King, Jr. Program is one of ten academic advising student communities in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota.
Our Mission
Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King's courageous leadership and vision of racial equality, the MLK program provides culturally competent, personalized, and holistic advising that advances academic excellence, campus engagement, and professional development for students from diverse backgrounds. We currently serve 40% of the students of color in the College of Liberal Arts which allows us to keep a low student-to-advisor ratio.
Our History
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Program is the oldest and longest existing program serving students of color on the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. The MLK Program was created after the landmark Morrill Hall takeover by a group of African American students who were seeking equity of programming, faculty, classes and other services. Through this historical event, set on the heels of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., our program was envisioned. The program has changed over the past 40 years but the goal to ensure students of color have access to the best academic resources on campus has remained the same.
